Synopsis:

Jorem of Escarp is in hiding for he has the power but is not trained in its use. Praying he does not get found by the Army marching by, he finds the village they had just sacked. After burning the victims of the Dukes army he discovers Thelia hiding in the cow fodder outside her burning home. Jorem gains her trust and convinces her that they must leave the land to escape the Army. For they are descendants of the Old Ones and will be killed on site. Jorem’s power saves them both from an encounter with the soldiers and Thelia vows to take him to Sable who could teach him how to use the power. In hopes that they may return to the land of Karsten and work their will on the Duke and his army.
